Conversation skills are really not that difficult to achieve. We have all met someone who is a champion conversationalist and envied them. With a little practice we can become skilled at it ourselves.
Here is a list of 10 traits that great conversationalists have in common:
1. Listen
The ability to really listen is so important and to be enthusiastic about the other person’s story. Let the person know you are listening through your body language and expression.
2. Never interrupt
Allow every speaker to finish what he/she is saying. No matter how boring never interrupt.
3. Sense of humour
Have a great sense of humour and be able to laugh at yourself without seeming negative.
4. Fill gaps
Know how to fill in any conversational gaps or long silences.
5. Knowledge is power
Can talk about anything and everything by being well read with a broad general knowledge.
6. Steer conversations
Know how to steer a conversation towards new and interesting depths.
7. Ignore other people’s mistakes
And not chastising or correcting them, especially when they make errors in grammar, pronunciation or consistency of storyline.
8. Look people in the eye
Look people in the eye when you are talking to them. It is very rude for your eyes to be wandering around the room.
9. Know when to talk subjects
Know when it is a good time to talk business and when it is time to make small talk.
10. Try not to be argumentative
Know how to offer opinions and ideas without being argumentative. You can disagree with someone and still be calm and polite about it. Simply say, “That’s an interesting way of looking at it. I’ve always felt that…”
There are some topics it is better not to talk about:
1. Medical problems
2. Gossip
3. Too much a about your career
4. Your diet
5. Be careful telling a long story
6. Money matters
7. Your pet hobby if it is not the other person’s hobby
